Rickett's Glen Ghost Hunting Trip Nov 7, 2009

Posted by HOPPS on November 1, 2009 at 8:42 AM

We're planning to go to the town of Ricketts at Ricketts Glen State Park (Just off Rt 118 between Red Rock and Lopez, Pa. on Nov 7th (Sat.) around 8 pm.

This abandoned town has a history of tragedy, ranging from a logger who was killed by a falling branch while his brother was teaching him the business (nothing has grown around the tree for almost 100 years), to the 1880's tragedy of the little boy who fell through thin ice on the lake, only to have his parents both succomb to a like fate while trying to rescue him. Many stories were related to us by one of the park rangers in the spring, but at the time the area was too full of people for a proper investigation. Now we're going back and taking anyone who wants to join us and get the experience of ghost hunting first hand.

We'll bring 4 portable camcorders, a few voice recorders and some EMF meters to conduct the investigation and give you the opportunity to get some hands on experience with the equipment.

I would image it will get cold, so bundle up, or at least be prepared for some lower 30's temperatures. The actual area we will be in is about 1/2 mile from any roads that are accessible by vehicle, so make sure you wear appropriate footware and that it can withstand possible wet weather. If it's projected to rain that evening we won't be going until Novermber sometime. If it rains earlier in the day and clears up by noon or so, we'll be going. My concern is for the equipment as the cameras and detectors are not waterproof, as well as someone getting sick from being out in the weather.

If you're already feeling sick or just starting out with symptoms, please don't come...I promise we'll be going back again and my concern is for everyone's health.

Let's meet at the main office on Rt 487 around 7:30 -8:00. We'll drive about 3 miles from there to the actual site of the town where you can expect to see the remains of the foundations from the homes that existed there until the early 1900's. We know the location of the old company store, one of the larger sawmills, the exact location of the tree where the man lost his brother to an accident, the old cabin location of the family who drowned back in the 1880's, and some of the homes.

If you need directions from your location, take a look at this website.

http://www.dcnr.state.pa.us/stateParks/parks/rickettsglen/rickettsglen_directions.pdf

There will probably be 20-30 people there, so bring whatever equipment you have, flashlights (small is good), cameras, recorders, etc. and we'll see what we can find. Don't bring food with you on the short hikes (leave it in your car), as there are wild animals in the area and we don't want to attract them to us.

There is limited cell phone service in the area, so don't expect to call if you get lost. Hopefully the map is easy enough to understand. If not, email me and I can probably give you some better directions.

See you there!

Regards,

John

Trip went well. We think one of the group caught an EVP of a girl saying Hi! One lady got a tape recorder knocked out of her hand, her first experience of that nature. Other than being a little cold, running into what looked like a bear and smelling some coyotes close by, it was a good time. Hopefully we'll be able to get some of the info and put it on the site. One of my recorders that was placed down in the old fire station pump house picked up what appears to be a heartbeat, but further analysis needs to be done. Overall a lot of things were discussed, and hopefully everyone leraned something about cold weather and equipment. Well worth the trip.

John,
I got thinking today about the heart beat you picked up last night. Could it be a posibility that back in the older days they used the hit and miss engines to power stuff, maybe that was the sounds of a hit and miss engine powering the pump house. Just a thought.

I thought of machinery when I first heard this as well. I'm not sure of what powered the pump house at this time, but will be checking into some information the Park Office and Rangers may have, including pictures. I'm just now transferring the info for analysis and will get a count of the beats and do some filtering to see if it's more mechanical than biological. I will have to experiment with that particular recorder as well to see if the 30 degree temp has any affect on the mechanism. I'll email you with the results. Thanks for coming, i'm glad you got to experience capturing a possible EVP and the immediate answer to my challange of playing a game. That still puzzles me because it did sound like the recorder was hit out of your hand rather than dropped.

I was just checking the audio recording on the player with the heart beat. There was no one around the recorder and at 7 min 28 sec and I heard a distinct noise, like someone touched the old barrel it was on. I counted 66 beats per minute and was recording onto the computer when the player went dead. Batteries were new, just out of the package just before I started recording. I put in another set, and when it powered up, there was nothing on the recorder -like it was erased. I thought no big deal, most of it's recorded onto a file, so I started to play the file. The file is blank, nothing but a hiss. OK, so this is how my luck goes sometimes. I won't be posting any audio now, but hopefully the video reveals something. You know what happened to my projector at the presentation --rarest malfunction that could occur says the manufacturer. Especially with only 25 hrs of play time on it. Is this a sign I'm not supposed document things? I don't know, but I'm going to keep doing it. I know I heard the heart beat, Crystal heard it, and you can't take a personal experience away. Frustrating to say the least, and as I told you at the presentation, this sometimes happens.

OK, so I did an experiment in the cold last night with the same recorder. What I found out is the heartbeat sound is definitely an internal mechanism sound from the recorder. Same sound, same number of beats per minute. I'm disappointed, but not really. I don't expect to find things on recordings, but when I do, I try to figure out why. Obviously I figured out why in this case. I figure the movement sound could have been as simple as the recorder not sitting level and perhaps with the wind blowing that night it could have moved a bit during a gust. Not everything is paranormal --you just have to dig and reason it out sometimes.

I'm sorry to hear that we didn't pick something up as well. I was excited to hear it. Great debunking John! We did get the childs voice on my recorder. If you have the equipment to pull it off this tape and can post on the web site your more than welcome to it.

I have the cables to transfer this to a computer. If you want to meet somewhere I can get the tape from you and return it once I transfer it. Call me 570-584-2844 and we'll work something out.

I did what little analysis was left on our recorders. We got a total of 2 hrs 15 min of audio, and would have had more except for errors we made or equipment malfunctions. Joe got a voice calling someone (we'll only guess who) a b_tch again, but this was accidentally erased before it was transferred as data (it happens sometimes when we get in a hurry). Also, Chris D. got an audio recording of a child saying "hi", which we did manage to keep. This preliminary investigation yielded enough for us to be interested in going back and putting some time into a full night's investigation either before bad weather sets in, or in the spring. Overall, I think we all experienced something --we need to go back!!!

I didn't mention, I finally got to see an ELF meter (similar to an EMF meter). ELF stands for Extremely Low Frequency (1 to 300 hz). EMF meters like the K-2 operate at 30-20,000hz.. I was interested in this as the human brain operates between .2 and 40hz on average. If we can see an apparition then it's possible the ELF will pick it up because it's operating within our normal spectrum of brain activity. Just makes sense to me if you can see it without the aid of special cameras or lenses, then possibly it's within our sensory range and may show up on the meter. While we didn't see anything on the EMF or ELF meters that night it's still a piece of equipment that may have useful applications. Thanks for bringing the ELF Gayle. (At least I hope that's who brought it, I'm terrible with names.). Let me know if I'm wrong.

Had posted a comment previously about the Ricketts trip--the post didn't print for some reason. As I mentioned to John the company was great & the trip was very productive. Listening to the play back the following day,A male voice emerged, responding to Crystal's voice. It was very distinguishable on the first play back, so I ran it through 4 more times to make sure. Played it back on the first run & she verified it said,"you bitch". In my haste, wanting to erase the dormant files, I accidently pressed the erase button twice & all files were deleted.Folks I'm sorry this evp could not be shared with you. My wife says she shutters thinking about that eerie voice. Joe S.

We may be going to Alvira again this weekend. There's the possiblity of joining up with another group (WPI) and canvassing the area one more time before cold weather sets in. Jonathan and I had a discussion tonight and we've seen some similar things out there so we may get together and try to get it on video this time. I'll email everyone and let them know what's going on by Wednesday night. Kinda short notice, but another investigation we had for the weekend backed out. Not a problem, sometimes these things happen.
